Macron: Why this about-face on Palestine?

Emmanuel Macron announced on July 24 that France would recognize the State of Palestine at a special conference scheduled for September at the United Nations headquarters. It will be the 148th state to do so, but the first member of the Security Council and the G7. This announcement coincides with a shift in public opinion, particularly in France, regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. It is becoming unbearable for everyone to let people die of hunger without any response.

This decision by President Macron is therefore important from a symbolic and diplomatic perspective, especially since Israel has made no concessions to French diplomacy since the beginning of the war. Furthermore, a two-state solution cannot be established without prior recognition of a Palestinian state. But this decision remains late and limited. And there are still two months to go before the official announcement of this recognition. The challenge now is how to concretely ensure the existence of this Palestinian state.
